Western.PNG The Western Road is a combat zone.

Journal Description

If you wished to shake off the dust of the village and escape to a life of adventure in the big city, The Western Road would be the place to start.

Or, rather, it would have been, before a gang of vicious bandits started roaming the road. Now, instead of heading to the bright lights of the big city, you're apt to get your lights put out, your pockets picked, and your body bruised.

Of course, that's how you would come limping back to the village if you had made it to the big city, so if you look at it that way, the bandits are just saving you the trip.

The Western Road is the only combat zone available at the beginning of the game. You are sent there by the Elder to locate the Dream Technician. After 6 successful fights against bandits, a cutscene shows that the bandits have killed the Technician, but left the jar. You can then return the jar to the Elder to unlock The Graveyard. You can sometimes (chances are 1 in 4) see Rafael, the bandit boss, lurking in the bushes during fights:

According to your Journal, it takes 19 fights to fully complete the Western Road: 6 of each basic bandit, and one with Rafael. Milestones are awarded after every other fight with a particular type of enemy. However, you cannot meet Rafael until you have encountered Benedict in The Graveyard and learned how to use the Dream Jar. After you talk to the Hamish Sagarian in the Elder's Hut and agree to help the town, then talk to him after the dream technician cutscene, and then get the cutscene in the graveyard, Rafael will appear as an encounter.
