The Ring

Thering.png

The Ring is a special zone where you fight increasingly tough opponents for rewards. It is reached from the main map, where it is located just west of The Village of Glavethile. It's unlocked on all characters after you've gotten one of the game's endings. You fight opponents in sets of five. While going through such a set, you cannot leave the ring (to change your equipment or restock on consumables, for example) without losing progress. Every fifth opponent gives a reward (see below), and functions as a "save point" so that you can choose start on the opponent/level after that one the next time if you lose to a later opponent or if you choose to leave The Ring. (You can also choose to start on the first fighter or at any "save point" inbetween.)

Defeating a Level 19 opponent and fighting again earns you the Geared Up achievement.

There is a "ringmaster" NPC that you talk to each time you enter The Ring. As of version 1.1, you can fight past level 100, but the NPC's dialog tree does not allow you to start beyond the 101st fighter if you exit The Ring and then return. Because of this mechanic and the way the inventory functions, the highest level you can fight to is 305: by selling your inventory and all equipped items, starting at the 101st, and winning 205 times in a row without exiting The Ring. (At that point, i.e., your 41st reward, you're fully equipped and your inventory is full. You're forced to clean it up, which also forces you to exit The Ring.) That said, it's probably impossible to win a fight at the 101st level, when your character is naked, without cheating.

Welcome to the Ring! Test your mettle and win prizes! Do you have what it takes?

  1. (if first time) Tell me more. (otherwise) Refresh my memory on the rules.
Jump into the ring, and you'll face a series of ever-more-ferocious opponents. Defeat five of them in a row, and you'll be rewarded with a special prize!
    Sounds great!
Once you enter the ring, you won't be able to switch up your skills or gear, or replenish the consumables on your belt. Make sure you're prepared!
That sounds less great, but okay...
Every time you get a prize, we'll make a note of your progress. On future visits to the Ring you'll be able to start fighting where you left off, or right after any earlier prize level.
Cause the opponents keep getting harder and harder?
And the prizes keep getting better and better! Well, in theory at least. They're random overstock from a large smithy in Paramount City. But of the highest quality, I assure you!
    Uh huh.
Do you want to fight? (and if you're new) Since you're relatively new here, you'll have to start at the beginning of the line.
Let's do this! (see option 2 below)
  2. (if first time) Where do I sign up? (otherwise) Of course I have what it takes!
(depending on how far you've gotten, a series of dialogs will allow the following options)
I'll start with the 6th fighter.
I'll start with the 11th fighter.
I'll start with the 16th fighter.
I'll start with the 21st fighter.
I'll start with the 26th fighter.
I'll start with the 31st fighter.
I'll start with the 36th fighter.
I'll start with the 41st fighter.
I'll start with the 46th fighter.
I'll start with the 51st fighter.
I'll start with the 56th fighter.
I'll start with the 61st fighter.
I'll start with the 66th fighter.
I'll start with the 71st fighter.
I'll start with the 76th fighter.
I'll start with the 81st fighter.
I'll start with the 86th fighter.
I'll start with the 91st fighter.
I'll start with the 96th fighter.
I'll start with the 101st fighter.
(beyond that, you get the following)
Hey! We didn't think anyone would make it this far. If you see this message, can you tell the developers to add more starting levels to the Ring?
Sure! Now can I start that fight with the 101st opponent?
I'll start with the first fighter again.
I'd like to start with a different fighter.
On second thought, I don't want to fight right now. (leave)
  3. I do, but I'm going to leave anyways. (leave)

Opponents

There are three basic opponent types: Fighter, Rogue, and Mage. Other character types have the same mechanics but a different appearance set of possible character names:

Other Type Original Type
Berserker Fighter
Knight Fighter
Homeless Wizard Mage
Wizard Wizard Mage
Bruiser Rogue
Skulker Rogue

Occasionally, an Easter egg name might appear for various types (chosen by high level kickstarter supporters):

Context Name
Male George, the guilt inducing
Berserker Emi the Psychobunny
Bruiser Swog the Nut Puncher
Mage FrostByghte of Coldfront
Mage, Female Phoebe Sunsayer
Mage, Male Hayek von Vortex

The above have a 1 in 500 chance of occurring, or 1 in 5 if you use the SWORDFISH trick.

The following Easter eggs were mentioned on this Kickstarter post and can appear as opponents in the Ring:

  • Ry'lurhrgh Von Ha'lrgrhl III, Esq.
  • Lazer Mike
  • The 3

These ones have a 1 in 1000 chance of occurring, or 1 in 10 if you use the SWORDFISH trick.

Each type has a set of base stats, which increases per level reached in the Ring.

Skills

Opponents have a set of random skills, partially determined by the level you are fighting at. Level 1 opponents seem to always have one passive skill, and one attack or instant skill. At higher levels, opponents can have more than one attack/instant skill, and starting at level 10, they have two passive skills.

Some skill effects increase in power at deeper levels in the ring. For these, M represents a difficulty multiplier.
