Kindness

From Word Realms Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

A player's kindness is kept track of behind-the-scenes and based solely on which options you choose in various conversations. Kindness is measured on an integer scale between -5 and 5. It starts at 0 and gets added to or subtracted from, sometimes by amounts greater than 1, with various choices. The game has been carefully designed to avoid having any repeatable conversations that affect your kindness. However, at least one place slipped through: see "If you've woken The Herbalist and The Blacksmith" in both tables below; at that point in the game, you can quickly become a much kinder or less kind player.

Effects of kindness level

Kindness often affects your available conversation options, which items are given by characters, and the prices of items sold (or Crafting skills taught) by some characters. It also notably affects the "bad" endgame cut scenes, but not your ability to get the "good" game ending, just the dialog therein.

To be exact, aside from endings, kindness affects your conversation options with:

...and furthermore:

KindnessEffect
<= -2Lowers the prices of everything besides Dandelion Wine at Harrond's shop by 50 or 100 gold, and allows you to buy Galec's Shield or Galec's Ring from Galec for 20 gold
<= -1Optionally lowers the cost of learning Crafting from Bagitha Grinswold by 300 gold
>= 0Lowers the cost of learning Crafting from Thorne Ironsman by 300 gold
>= 2Allows you to get the Elder's Shield or Elder's Ring from the Elder

Sometimes whether options for gaining or losing kindness are available depend on your preexisting kindness level. Other times, the same option will cause either a gain or a loss, depending on your preexisting kindness level, in order to bring your kindness closer to a neutral 0.

Losing Kindness

Bagitha Grinswold and The Scribe's Daughter have the only two opportunities to lose 2 kindness in one action. Otherwise most characters allow gain or loss by 1 kindness point at a time.

CharacterContextConversation
Bagitha GrinswoldAfter beating her nightmare

Time to wake up, Granny. (lose 1 kindness)
With this dream jar. It wasn't easy, and I expect compensation for my time. (lose 1 kindness)
Pick flowers for you? Yeah, maybe I'll do that. And maybe I'll teach a lobster to fart showtunes. (lose 1 kindness)

Any time after waking her, except for certain contexts

(if you have at least 100 gold) You'll take 100 gold, if you know what's good for you. (lose 2 kindness)

Zigmund QuillinkIf you've just found the Scribe in The Forest

Man, you'd better be. If my eyebrows hadn't grown back so quickly, you'd be in real trouble. (lose 1 kindness)

If you've just found the Scribe in The Forest

That sucks. Well, good luck with that. I'll see you around. (lose 1 kindness)

Thorne IronsmanAfter beating his nightmare

After getting the flux

So what's this stuff worth to you? (lose 1 kindness, but gain 30 gold)

Hamish SagarianIf you've never talked to the Elder before

I haven't got a clue what you're blabbering about, old man. (lose 1 kindness)
I can't drink gratitude. But okay, I'm in. (lose 1 kindness)

If you refused to scout The Western Road

There's nothing to do in this stupid town! (lose 1 kindness)

You sent me into a deathtrap, you old fool! (lose 1 kindness)

If you just found the Dream Technician

Whose name? (if kindness > 2, lose 1 kindness)
Just spit it out already, will you? (lose 1 kindness)
Me? Look pal, I'm just passing through here. (lose 1 kindness)

If you've just found Benedict

Yeah. But I still resent being dragged into this mess. (lose 1 kindness)

If you've woken The Herbalist and The Blacksmith

You guys are so going to owe me when this is over. (lose 1 kindness)

After the Gorg cutscene in The Gramlin Hideout

After beating The Vat Brain's Nightmare but before killing Brian the Disembodied Brain in Fort Nox

I guess, yeah. (if kindness > 2, lose 1 kindness)
Well, mainly I don't want to get brain glop on my clothes. (lose 1 kindness)

BenedictN/A

Stay out of my head, weirdo! What are you even talking about? (lose 1 kindness)
I'm upgrading you from 'weirdo' to 'freak'. (lose 1 kindness)
Because you're a huge weirdo? (lose 1 kindness)
Yeah, I guess. Although I still haven't seen any proof that it's gonna be worth my time. (lose 1 kindness)
