To calculate combat damage, you need to consider the Word Score, Attack, and Defense and other bonuses.

  • Word Score is determined by adding up the value of the tiles you played to make a word. (eg. ARE has a word score of 6.)
  • Attack is the number in the upper corner of the combat screen with the sword icon. It is calculated as the sum of your Strength or Intelligence (for Warrior or Wizards respectively), the power of your weapon, and any other +Attack bonuses from equipment.
  • Defense is the number in the upper corner of the combat screen with the shield icon. It is calculated as the sum the power of your armor (various slots), and any other +Defense bonuses from equipment.

Damage is calculated as:

If Attack ≤ Defense:
     Base Damage = Word Score
If Attack > Defense:
     Base Damage = (Attack - Defense + 20) / 20 x Word Score

(aka for each point attack is higher than defense, add 5% bonus damage)

So, if your Attack is 20 greater that opponent's Defense, base damage is doubled. If your attack is 60 greater than your opponent's Defense, base damage is quadrupled. Once Base Damage is calculated, other damage modifiers apply (eg. Black Heart or Firebolt). Needs spading if additive or multiplicative bonuses apply first.

Note that some skills modify your word score (eg. Mighty Blow), while others modify your damage (Firebolt), while other modify your attack (Aggressive Stance).
